a-1 home care whittier in home after surgery careWhat are the chances that your elderly loved one is being abused?  According to a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Toronto, Cornell University and Weill-Cornell Medical College, results show that seniors who live alone are four times more likely to be abused, especially when “the abuser has unrestricted and uninhibited access to the victim,” according to the researchers.  Sometimes, seniors may even meet their perpetrators through a seemingly innocent conversation with a server at a restaurant who eventually worms her way through the elderly person’s heart.  Loneliness and cognitive impairment (and judgment) are the two biggest factors influencing seniors to make poor decisions.  Does your elderly loved one hang on to his independence by living at home alone?  Are you afraid to move your loved one in with you for fear that elder care might interfere with your personal life?  A-1 Home Care in Whittier is a name you can trust for elder care

Established in 1991, A-1 Home Care has been serving families and their elderly loved ones for over 24 years.  Licensed, bonded and insured, A-1 Home Care gives families a peace of mind, knowing that if they entrust their loved ones to a live-in or live-out caregiver from A-1 Home Care in Whittier, they know that the caregiver has been thoroughly screened for a criminal background check, DMV check, and sex offender check.  All professional references are verified, and they also have to pass two interviews with the care management staff and you, the Client.  A-1 Home Care only recruits the cream of the crop, and when our care managers match a caregiver with your elderly loved ones, it’s 100% satisfaction guaranteed.  No one knows your parents or grandparents better than you do, which is why we don’t charge for services until you have met the caregiver(s) first and approve of them.  We do not blindly assign certified nurse aides, certified home health aides, personal care aides or home helpers.

Your trust is very important to us.  We honor integrity, commitment, and quality to the highest degree, and we are thankful for our culturally diverse team of caregivers who play an important role in impacting the lives of seniors in Whittier, Pico Rivera, Cerritos, Downey, City of Industry, Hacienda Heights, La Habra, La Mirada, Buena Park, and other communities in the surrounding areas.  Should you decide to hire a caregiver for your father or mother who lives alone, or hire a caregiver to move in with you to care for your loved one, A-1 Home Care will be there to assist you.  You can call us any time of the day, 24 hours a day, and get a live operator.  We are open 365 days a year, including major holidays like Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s Day.

Men tend be more stubborn about their health problem more than women.  I’ve seen it in the generations before mine, they seem to avoid the doctor’s visit at all cost.  However, there are health risks that men should never ignore.  Since we are in the middle of Men’s Health Week, we want to raise awareness about the top health risks for men, and the importance to make their health a priority.

  1. Cardiovascular Disease – The leading cause of death for men AND women worldwide. It is important to control your cholesterol and blood pressure, eat more fruits and vegetables while consuming less saturated or trans fat, and make a concerted effort on doing physical activities 30 minutes a day for most days of the week.
  2. Lung Cancer – Despite knowing that smoking is the primary cause for lung cancer, many men are still smoking. Regardless of how long you’ve smoked or what age you are, quitting smoking immediately reduces your risk for lung cancer.  However, we understand that quitting is difficult, so definitely seek support when quitting.
  3. Prostate Cancer – Other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the the 2nd most common type of cancer for men.  Luckily, only about 1 in 35 men will die from this cancer because it is a slow growing cancer that hardly spread to other parts of the body.  Regularly consult with your doctor about the need for screening.
  4. Diabetes – Diabetes develop over the years as blood sugar creeps higher, and the result can be devastating, such as heart attacks, strokes, blindness, kidney failure and more.  Regular exercise and healthy diet can prevent type 2 diabetes along with other health benefits.

While these are just some of the health risks that men faces as they age, they are definitely ones that you should never ignored.  The body is like a car, maintenance is key for it to run smoothly, so feed it with a healthy diet, and keep it running it top shape by doing regular exercise.

Picture this scene – 5,000 participants helping to decorate the graves of over 20,000 both Union and Confederate soldiers.  That is what Memorial Day is all about and how it really originated.  This day was originally called the Decoration Day because people began decorating the graves of the fallen, but since World War I, it has evolved into Memorial Day to include all soldiers who have made sacrifices for this country.  While Memorial Day is a full day commemoration for the men and women who died during their military conflicts, there is an exact moment at 3:00 pm local time nationwide for a moment of silence is observed.  Although Memorial Day is not a three day weekend filled with plenty of events to do, many around the country still take their time to honor and remember and honor those who have died protecting our freedom and our safety.

Mother and Daughter Smiling

Mother’s day is a little over a week away, and instead of focusing on the cards, the flowers or the chocolate, it is also a great time to reflect on what our mothers mean to all of us.  Personally, there is an overwhelming gratitude that will never diminish because of all the compassion my mom has shown over all these years.  She is always there to lift everyone up when we are down, and she always stay strong despite the hurdles that she had to go through.  More importantly, it is the mother’s unconditional love that she displays each and every day that holds the whole family together.  It is truly impossible to be a “perfect” mother with the amount of responsibilities that they have to juggle, but all their effort alone in trying to become that perfect mother is enough for us to celebrate their achievements beyond the second Sunday in May.  So go out and tell your mom that you love her, give her a hug, provide her with any support you can, and give back to her what she already gave to us!

It is difficult to discuss the topic of cancer with loved ones, but when there are ways to reduce their risks of a cancer that is largely preventable, then it is worth opening up the discussion about it.  Colon and colorectal cancer are “preventable, treatable, and beatable”, and there are simple ways that everyone can do to reduce their risks of getting the disease according to colorectal cancer awareness.

Most importantly, get screened after you turn age 50.  Regular screening can do a major part in detecting precancerous polyps that eventually turn into cancer, and this can ultimately prevent the cancer.  Of course, if you are experiencing symptoms such as rectal bleeding, cramping or stomach pain, change in bowel habits, or gas pains, then definitely visit the doctor even if you are younger than the age of 50.  Finally, living a healthy lifestyle always help.  Certainly, you have to maintain a healthy diet and exercise.  But eliminating bad habits such as smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can also reduce your risk of colon cancer.

Spread the words to your friends and family about reducing their colon cancer risks, and tell them to spread it to their loved ones. In turn, we can all help reduce the number of deaths by simply raising awareness!

A-1 Home Care is constantly looking for opportunities to give back to our community.  Since Mardi Gras was just recently celebrated, our case manager, Jackie Brown, suggested that we bring the celebration to seniors in the form of a Mardi Gras arts and craft event.  Due to our previous success with the folks at the Whittier Senior Center, we were confident that we could bring some smiles to the participants.  Through markers, glitter glue, sequins, and ribbons, the seniors were able to create some unique and colorful designs, and most importantly, had a wonderful time with everyone.
